Transition year students in Confey College, decided to write to those who might be isolated in their community this Christmas. They wanted to make a connection to those who were feeling alone during this time of Covid. Some students decided to write to elderly relatives like grandparents, others identified those living on their own in their neighbourhood whom they felt might be feeling alone and isolated.
The students also wanted to make contact with nursing home residents who because of covid 19 might not be having as many visits from their family.
They made beautiful handmade Christmas cards and each wrote a number of letters. Their teacher Ms Rosaleen Power said, ‘it was wonderful to see the way the students wrote their letters, taking time to ask how the person living on their own was feeling?, describing their young lives in school and how covid has affected them, sharing their thoughts and experiences’.
Each student took such care to decorate their letters and made sure that their letters were funny, inviting and interesting.”
The students hope that those they have reached out to will reply to their letters and they will have a few new pen pals to write to. It is such a simple idea but one which can make a real difference to a person living on their own to get a letter for Christmas. This project has sown seeds of friendship and hope during this Christmas season.
